UN to protect future generations

UN general secretary Ban ki-moon has finally presented his long-awaited report concerning the rights of future generations. Last year, terre des hommes was present at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio, campaigning together with other organisations such as the World Future Council for the establishment of a post of »high commissioner for the rights of future generations« in the United Nations.

Suspense-packed talks on the protection of future generations
Despite the fact that this demand was detailed right to the end in the draft for the final document for the conference, the community of states present were unable to agree on the setting up of such a post. Instead, the UN general secretary was first of all commissioned to draft a report with specific recommendations for the better protection of future generations. This report has now been published. And what a surprise - the general secretary recommends establishing a post for a high commissioner for future generations.

Success for the campaign for the rights of children to a healthy environment
This is good news for terre des hommes’ campaign. In December, we aim to organise an expert discussion in Bonn to talk about ways to create the post of ombud for future generations on a national and local level.
